Properly named A Tour Guide Movie or A Tourist’s Guide to Love, it is a romantic comedy, which premiered on Netflix on April 21, 2023. The film, which stars Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda Riley, is a travel executive who is in Vietnam after a break up with her boyfriend John (Ben Feldman) when directed by Steven K. Tsuchida.

Amanda is then charged with taking secret service to Vietnam to evaluate a local tour company. Tourista World Travel is her firm, and she's on a mission to learn about what the company does in terms of operations and how potentially 'acquirable' it is.
Her opportunity to do so is nevertheless different when she runs into good looking and motivational tour guide, Sinh (Scott Ly). Along with learning about the local culture, Amanda begins to discover that she can learn about herself and the feelings that a long time apart can make, as she explores Vietnam. The film is a mix of familiar romantic comedy clichés with exotic locations.
The genre is normally a story of a corporate executive-turned-tourist in a foreign land, a common theme, but the film’s setting is in Vietnam. Through this movie we could see the beauty of Vietnam, those are the streets of Ho Chi Minh City with so much clutter, the serene beaches of Da Nang, and the beautiful hills of Sinh’s village. It’s also notable the cinematography of Jon Keng serves to capture the Malaysian’s landscapes and culture.

Based on 8 critics, the film had been assigned a score of 49 out of 100 by Metacritic, a weighted average, and the score indicates “mixed or average” reviews. RogerEbert.com's Christy Lemire gave the film two and a half stars for falling close to genre cliché.
Cook's 'likability' and Ly's 'charisma' were praised but he said the story was 'as harmless as its blandly forgettable title would suggest.' Variety’s Courtney Howard was more positive giving props for the chemistry between Cook and Ly, along with the inclusion of Vietnam’s sights and sounds into the story. While she also said that the film is still beholden to genre tropes, it could have trodden a less predictable path to tell that narrative.

It may not be a breakout, but it’s a fun light-hearted and delicious watch for anyone that’s looking to take their mind off things momentarily. The drawback of this film is it takes on familiar tropes, but it’s scenic beauty and the chemistry between the two main leads makes it worth a watch if you’re a fan of the genre.
