Azaad is a historical cinema entry in the form of a 2025 Indian Hindi language period drama film. The film, directed by Abhishek Kapoor, is produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Pragya Kapoor. The star cast includes Ajay Devgn, Diana Penty and debutants Aaman Devgan and Rasha Thadani. In October 30, 2024, Singham Again promotion we announced the film and teaser of the film was released on November 5, 2024. Its theatrically release was on January 17, 2025 to mixed-to negative reviews by critics.

Azaad Movie Explained

Azaad is a 1920s tale of a poor stable boy that forms an unusual bond with an equally poor spirited horse named Azaad. Told as a tale of rebellion and resilience, as the boy rides the beautiful horse on their journey it ends up being also a journey into self discovery and courage. It brings themes associated with freedom and the fight for independence in India together, personal and national struggles.

It’s a common theme in many films: the bond between a horse and a stable boy. It stays at the heart of the narrative. But on the basis of setting and storyline, the film also resemble Lagaan, having cruel zamindars and Englishmen ruling in over the villagers. Later, the film also comprises floggings, threats to banish villagers to 'Africa' as cried bonded labor, an extra layer of historical context.

Azaad, a film upon release got mixed to negative review from critics. Indian Express rated the film 1/5, Shubhra Gupta wrote Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgan wasted in moth-balled film. Why don’t people stop making such films in 2025? So is Abhishek Kapoor, who gave us the wonderful 'Kai Po Che' and 'Rock On', really the director of this mothballed exercise?” Similar to all were Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV, who gave the movie 1.5/5, complaining that the disjointed, weak screenplay prevented debutants Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgan from making an impact.

Whilst not all reviews were negative though. Times of India’s Abhishek Srivastava gave the movie 3/5 calling it “… while ‘Azaad’ has moments of grandeur, it’s let down with an altogether lack of emotional and narrative payoff…” The noble intentions are on view in this grand spectacle, but it fails to cement itself.” Azaad gets a 3/5 rating on Pinkvilla and says, “For those who want to watch a simple, well made period piece that doesn’t set out to reinvent the wheel but rolls well down the path paved in front of it, Azaad is worth a watch.”

Azaad Movie on Netflix

Azaad isn’t available to stream on Netflix as of now. The film will release in theaters on January 17, 2025 and is yet to be confirmed for streaming. Because the film has received mixed reviews and has thus far earned less than it cost to make, it is unlikely that the movie will ever be added to a streaming service like Netflix.

Is It Good?

Azaad receives a horrible run of critical reception, with most critics damning its weak screenplay and absence of deep emotional departure. Grand visuals and a noble theme are going to have to hold you over, as there’s nothing in this film that pays off, or brings you there appropriately emotionally. The film’s sole debuts are in Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgan, but they’re not enough to save it.

Azaad is a movie which just doesn’t engage its audience because of a dull first half, a weak script and no romantic touch. The result won’t appeal to anyone who enjoys period dramas — far from thrilling on screen.
