The movie ‘Nowhere’ is set in a dystopian Spain, where the regime has introduced cruel methods, e.g. removing the people they see to have no value, old people, children, and pregnant women.

Being pregnant doesn't outweigh the fact that Mia can't exist, so she and her husband, along with a load of other pregnant women, try to leave the country by hiding in a container moving to a freight ship bound for Ireland. When Mia and Nico are separated forcibly, Mia finds herself alone in the sea, fighting for survival.

Nowhere Movie Explained

Nowhere is the story of a woman's survival in a dystopian world, which can be explained as a type of survival movie. That’s basically the film’s plot: Mia’s journey, trying to find a safe haven for herself and her unborn child, to escape the regime.

The questions it asks about the treatment of refugees, treatment of human life and human spirit, and survival all feature in this movie. A dystopian setting is used in the film to joke at the current refugee crisis and the tough times those people go through, running away from war-torn or oppressive countries.

Nowhere Movie Reviews

“There is a divided camp for ‘Nowhere’, with some critics singing its direction and Anna Castillo’s performance, but there is also a camp concerned with the film’s tone and the director’s pace.” Some reviewers found fault with the way in which a dystopian setting was used to tell the story and thought the story could have been just as effective without a dystopia.

And others have lauded the film for its ability to show the desperate and hopeless plight of all the people, as well as the woman’s lot in male-dominated societies.

The review on RogerEbert.com says that "Nowhere" thrives when it's most deliberate, and when that single-setting, single-character survival story graphically depicts the stakes and desperation of that character. The review also finds that while the film’s discussion of the refugee crisis is antiseptic, the film is not always smooth.

  • Users on Reddit have discussed the film’s plot and ending, as well as whether or not some events were actually real and the fates of some characters. The emotional weight of the character’s journey is being accurately conveyed by some users and a slating of the film’s use of happy ending contrivances and implausible situations by others.

    Nowhere Movie Netflix

You can watch “Nowhere” on Netflix or choose it for the people you streamed with recently. Being available on Netflix has allowed for a tremendously broad audience to see the film and has started conversations (and at times debates) about the themes and plot of the film.

Though “Nowhere” is certainly the first film Netflix has produced, it’s also just one of the platform’s many offerings, which have ranged widely in theme and scope, and spread across many languages.

    Is it Good?

Is "Nowhere" a good movie, then? This question is totally subjective to personal taste and preference. One place forward: If you have a thing for survival stories and dystopian thrillers, you may like “Nowhere”. The single-setting and single-character survivor story of the film serves its purpose of amplifying stakes and urgency in the character, and Anna Castillo’s performance draws in and pulls on an emotional chord.

But if you prefer something more grounded (even if more gritty and gross), and are looking for a setting that’s a little less fantastical and even a little closer to home, then “Nowhere” may not be the movie for you. Some may find the film’s dystopian setting, and depiction of violence and oppression, off-putting, and the film’s tone and pace uneven.

Modern “Nowhere” is a matter of personal opinion, I guess. But hopefully, you will decide for yourself what you want and not read the comments about how everyone else is wrong in their opinion. Want to watch a thought-provoking, emotionally charged film set in a world where the human spirit is very much in question? Then “Nowhere” sounds good. But, if it's a more lighthearted or even realistic film you’re looking for, you may have to leave.

  • Finally, “Nowhere” has started conversations and talking about themes and plot. While some might find the film’s dystopian setting and theme of violence and repression off-putting, the film’s handling of survival, hope, and the human spirit gives it much food for thought and adds a hefty emotional quotient.

Of course, “Nowhere” is not a good movie, and I leave it to each reader to decide if they think it is or not, but it’s a film to watch and discuss, for sure.
