A 2013 family-oriented film directed by Sean McNamara and produced by Jason Netter. The screenplay and story were written by Jeff Phillips, Sean McNamara, Ronald Bass, Stan Chervin, and Jim Strain. Its cast includes Thomas Horn, Mira Sorvino, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Lucas, and Danny Glover, among others.

Released May 31, 2013, on Hallmark Channel’s Walden Family Theater series. Larry Brown composed the movie’s theme music, and Jeff Canavan edited the movie. The one exception was again the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where the backdrop was built for the Space Camp competition.

Space Warriors Explained

Set inside a group of six highly talented teenagers, Space Warriors follows these six who are chosen to participate in the most selective summer space camp competition at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. It provides a space of tasks that require the participants to challenge different types of tests, which are useful for evaluating their skill and knowledge related to space.

The film’s plot thickens when the teenagers are suddenly faced with a real-life crisis: Russian astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) are losing air and are in trouble. The protagonist is Jimmy Hawkins, son of a retired NASA astronaut. He is interested in astronomy and even dreams of going into space.

Despite Jimmy’s parents initially being against the Space Camp competition, he decides to go. Other astronomy-loving teenagers that he meets at the camp join together to form the team called the Space Warriors. They play against another group known as the Titans, with the best team being sent up to space. The ever-more intense competition turns out to be essentially a race to save the ISS from a deadly crisis.

Cowering millions watch as teenagers work with adults to repair the station using robo-astronauts. Jimmy’s heroics keep him grounded for two months, however, for lying to his parents about his involvement in the camp. But Colonel Manley, played by Josh Lucas, tells him, 'Congratulations, you're a brave guy and you're a hero.' So, the rest of the campers have a party to finish their amazing day in the end.

Space Warriors Movie Review

Space Warriors has been well received, but differently by viewers and critics alike. Reviewers on IMDb give the film a rating of 4.2 out of 10 — generally negative. Not many have appreciated the movie despite its removal of all elements related to the adults in society, praising the content, which is considered family-friendly and educational.

IMDb reviewer rates it four out of five stars, saying it would have us thinking about space and the universe. But another viewer said it was a ‘sh*** movie,’ which strongly contradicted her views. The reviews are even more polarized on Letterboxd. The film was called 'ridiculously cheesy but fun,' while others said it's 'horrifyingly, jaw-droppingly inept.'

The movie got praised for its down-to-earth approach and the way it builds up to a suspenseful climax. Dove.org also awarded the film with a Family Approved seal and five Doves, their best award, for all ages. It commended the movie for its telling of consequences, redemption, as well as its tense story.

Is It Good?

A great storytelling mix of science fiction, adventure, and action makes it interesting to a large audience.
