Toto and His Sisters: The story of three siblings growing up in a Bucharest ghetto, trying to cope after their mother goes to jail and their father disappears.

Toto and His Sisters Explained

The film is about Toto Andreea Ana three siblings who are 10 to 14 years apart. A Romani woman-is now in prison for an unexplained offense. This is how they come to be all three children alone in a harsh urban environment-from facing the harsh realities of poverty, prejudice, and abandonment while the three clung together-and to themselves-for comfort in trying times.

Being quite personal and unobtrusive, Nanau captures what amounts to the banal sounding but for some children most important events in life-him again scavenging through rubbish heaps for food or taking him to school while avoiding those scary bullies, probably even occasionally indulging in fires of creativity or, if not creating a smoke screen, scratching out tentative connections with their estranged father. And wherever the camera goes through the streets of Bucharest with these kids, it deepens one's understanding of their world on such occasions as how hardship is borne.

Toto and His Sisters Review

"Toto and His Sisters" cuts a critical niche by virtue of its very subtle and sympathetic portrayal of life on the periphery. Such poetics cinematography, smart editing, and sweetened suffering also formed the core of accolades for the film.

Many critiques have written about how amazing access into the character lives, which was earned by Nanau's very careful, non-intrusive methodology. The film sidesteps the usual traps of sentimentalism and voyeurism because the siblings share their own stories; instead it gives a highly complex and really sympathetic glimpse on family life.

  • Is it nice?

"Toto and His Sisters" is an excellent film; make no mistake about it-a very good film. But this documentary, with its careful pace and beautiful photography, as well as its deep empathy towards its protagonists, is nothing short of a must-see for anyone enchanted by or involved in stories of survival and optimism in families.

It has some hard moments-initially, it's hard to listen to the abandonment and poverty they suffer. Over all, however, it is a story of hope and inspiration, with characteristics of Nanau reminding us how these real brothers are touched by love, family, and community and what unlimited potential lies in the most uninvited, vulnerable ones among us.
