Roar Uthaug directed the 2022 Norwegian epic monster film, Troll. Starring Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, and Gard B. Eidsvold, the film features Norway's top 3 film music composers.

A group of people must come together to stop an ancient troll that's been awakened in a Norwegian mountain from wreaking havoc. Released on Netflix on Dec. 1, it has received (mostly) positive and mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Troll Movie Explained

That’s a simple idea for a premise that works well. It investigates the awakening of an ancient creature and the human response to such an event. The troll is a fearsome antagonist, a fearsome monster whose pound-for-pound defeat of Tolkien's dwarves is much pondered.

An action film with a bit of family-friendly humor, the film’s tone is broad enough to appeal to the masses. When the troll appears, it is pretty much like something out of classic monster movies — with a modern twist. At 1 hour and 41 minutes, the film’s runtime works perfectly, as one of the film’s main selling points, as it feels just enough time to weave the story.

There are also still more scenes added during the end credits as well, and they really give you the hint that there’s a possible sequel to the film in the works. The troll, to me, is the story, the arc of how society reacts to the unknown, how the characters interact with the troll, and what the troll is doing to shape the narrative forward.

Troll Movie Reviews

The generally positive reviews for “Troll” have followed. While 87 percent of 30 critics’ reviews are positive on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average of 6.5 out of 10. It doesn’t rewrite the monster movie rule books, reads the website’s consensus, but with mythology this rich and action this exciting, it doesn’t have to.

On Metacritic, which weighted average, the film has a score of 62 out of 100, from 4 critics, representing ‘generally favorable’ reviews. But the film has not been well received by audiences. On IMDb, the movie has 5.8 and on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is 46%.

    Troll on Netflix

At the new Yahoo, Meaningful Media, a stake in ‘Troll’ was distributed on December 1, 2022 from Netflix. With the film’s release on the streaming platform, it is able to communicate to a global audience. The release of the film on Netflix has been much in praise for its accessibility as well as the global content on offer by the platform.

    Is It Good?

Who decides whether or not “Troll” was good is subjective and, quite frankly, just depends on what someone likes. There's critics and audience that have mixed feelings about the film. A popcorn-munching, fun movie that works well with the monster movie genre, or derivative, and lacking in originality.

The film’s biggest strengths are the awesome visual effects (although I digress some of a few, a slip and a jump on the part having to do with Switzerland), as well as the compelling plot. It’s a light, family-friendly film which is safe for all audiences to see. Nevertheless, some viewers demur at how simple the plot of the film is and how family-oriented it is, and the film may not be to their hearts as much for more serious monster movie fans.

Troll’ is a visually arresting, fascinatingly coherent, and somewhat unique monster movie, ending the trends of the genre rather than perpetuating them. It may not be groundbreaking, but it does just what it set out to do: be fun and entertaining for monster movie fans and for anyone interested in Norwegian folklore.
