It's a 2013 American action horror film directed by Marc Forster and starring Brad Pitt, Gerry Lane (a former UN investigator,) who searches for a solution to a sudden zombie apocalypse worldwide. Based on the 2006 novel of the same name by renowned author Max Brooks, author of the satirical and darkly funny apocalyptic novels, Planet of the Apes is a new movie inspired by the one that the best man, Shelley Duvall, provided for the year 2001.

In 2007, the movie rights to Brooks’ novel were picked up by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, which joins with him in an effort to translate this thrilling story to the big screen.

World War Z movie Explained

What the film is about actually is Gerry Lane, protagonist, running through a world where zombies are literally everywhere. Written in a series of flashbacks and real time events, we follow Lane as he moves from location to location, starting with Jerusalem, moving to Moscow, then Seoul. Lane's job is to discover the cause of the zombie outbreak, and to do something about it.

There’s a decent mix of suspenseful action sequences and the status of the global Zombie apocalypse thrown at us. The film goes way off the rails from its source material, being an oral history of the zombie apocalypse.

As a result, the movie chooses the typical narrative path, concentrating not on the personal life but on the life’s path of Lane and the ramifications this outbreak has. The shift in storytelling style has been both praised and vilified, with some calling the film a rush of action and some mourning the book’s one of a kind style.

World War Z movie Reviews

World War Z didn’t undergo the warmest reception upon its initial release. A 6.2/10 including a 67% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Overall the film's action sequences were praised by its critics and its performance by Brad Pitt, but also found its plot and character development a little uneven.

  • At the time, the movie was a commercial success, having made $66.4 million in North America and $45.8 million internationally, the film's opening weekend was the largest so far for a Brad Pitt starred film. Roger Ebert’s write up in the New York Times lauded the effort that the film made of trying to marry horror with a more traditional narrative arc.

While visually impressive and boasting of some thrilling moments, Ebert says the movie isn’t able to do what the zombie genre is all about. Sometimes, the high budget spectacle that drives the film overshadows what would actually make a zombie movie a good one, such as the undead protagonists, said he.

    World War Z movie Netflix

World War Z's journey from theatrical release, to streaming home via Netflix, has been lengthy. With the film available to Netflix, a wider audience can watch the movie because otherwise they wouldn’t have the opportunity to see it in theaters.

The film’s introductory on the streaming platform has been received well, giving viewers the opportunity to watch, or discover, the movie in an easy fashion.

    Is It Good?

Whether or not World War Z is a good film is something to be taken on a case by case basis, the opinion diverges. Now available for those fans of high octane action and Brad Pitt’s performances, the movie is a thrilling and visually stunning experience. Fused with a global scale narrative and somewhere between a slasher flick and an outright epic, you get a zombie apocalypse movie in a shade other than spine chillingly red. But for readers who like a little more character, or plot, the film may not satisfy.

  • Although the film is fun and technically well done action-wise, critics and audiences alike have pointed out that, despite showcasing some of the best action set pieces I’ve seen in a film in recent history, the novel refers to specific depth and nuance which were absent from the film. There has been no small degree of discontent for the ways the film’s deviations from the source material have been interpreted as a diminished focus on the substance as opposed to the spectacle which the original story possesses.

But I’ll finish with this: World War Z is visually impressive and action packed zombie apocalypse film that breaks new ground. While it does not completely do justice to the genius of the novel, it makes for an exciting and thrilling ride for those seeking out a high-octane, globe trotting adventure.
