Peaky Blinders Explained

If gripping crime saga is what we’re looking for, then Peaky Blinders follows Thomas “Tommy” Shelby portrayed beautifully by Cillian Murphy. 'The Shelby family' (head by Tommy Shelby) is an underworld gang running in the post-war Birmingham.

The crime and violence isn’t what the series is about, it’s about family, loyalty, and power struggles in a changing society. The show each season takes a deeper dive into the Shelby family’s rise and fall and the political and social upheavals of the time.

Forgetting that it's just a TV show is something that can be difficult about 'Downton Abbey,' because of how incredibly meticulous it is: there's the period accurate costumes and sets and the beautifully nuanced performances of the cast. The narrative weaves with historical events in the Shelby family’s story.

Besides an ensemble cast including Helen McCrory as Elizabeth “Polly” Gray, Paul Anderson as Arthur Shelby, Sophie Rundle as Ada Shelby, and Joe Cole as John Shelby, the series also features an ensemble cast. The characters fill in the already great story and make it more than just a crime piece.
