Entertainment Weekly called that series' debut 'an intriguing, fresh and exciting interpretation of the legendary sleuth'. It premiered on July 25, 2010 on BBC One and BBC HD. Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), is a "high functioning sociopath" with skills of observation and deduction that make him nearly as smart as the average six-year-old child.

Dr. John Watson, a veteran of the Afghanistan war and one of Sherlock's best friends and biographer is here played by Martin Freeman. Intelligence, humor, suspense, all presented in a way that was quickly becoming a global phenomenon, the show was a hit with viewers.

Sherlock Explained

Originally known as a crime drama about the adventures of the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes and Watson his partner as they take down some mean, sneaky, complicated and intriguing cases in modern-day London, at its heart, Sherlock is a crime drama. The show creators have done with the originals, updating characters, settings, and plotlines to popular tastes.

All remains of Sherlock’s essential character traits including his amazing intellect, quirkiness, and flaws, but of course. Each episode is on its own, although some storylines go on past one episode and into seasons. Using modern technology such as mobile phones, computers, and social media the show now provides a fresh layer of complexity to a traditionally detective genre.

One of the most critically lauded writing, acting, and production values can be found in the Briton series, Sherlock. The first episode, A Study in Pink, was complimented for its clever take on the first original novel, A Study in Scarlet. Reviewers lauded the show’s tone: split between humor and suspense — and the chemistry of Cumberbatch and Freeman.

  • 'The Guardian' critic Dan Martin said the episode was 'brilliantly promising,' while The Independent's Tom Sutcliffe called the show 'triumph, witty and knowing, without ever underscoring the flair and dazzle of the original.' But some reviewers had less than glowing praise for the story, objecting to some elements not explained or wondering why the mystery wasn't better.

    Four seasons of the series are there and with a different episode set and storyline with each season. Here’s a brief overview of each season:

  • Season 1: Comprising 3 episodes (July 25, 2010 - August 8, 2010) — Introduces the main characters, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, for this series. In-season are the episodes ‘A Study in Pink,’ ‘The Blind banker’ and ‘The Great game,’ of which the first shows Sherlock’s great detective skills and complex character.
  • Season 2: Comprising 3 episodes (January 1, 2012 - January 15, 2012) — It explores the characters' relationships and introduces new villains, including Irene Adler and Moriarty. Episodes “A Scandal in Belgravia,” “The Hounds of Baskerville” and ‘The Reichenbach Fall’ are particularly strong ones that increase the stakes and add some much-needed urgency to the character’s hands.
  • Season 3: Comprising 3 episodes (January 1, 2014 - January 12, 2014) — Picks up where Season 2 ended, with Sherlock returning to London to try to rebuild things, the season contains the episode ‘The Empty Hearse,’ ‘The Sign of Three’ and ‘His Last Vow’ into the background of the characters’ backstory and motivations deeper.
  • Season 4: Comprising 3 episodes (January 1, 2017 - January 15, 2017) — Unravel some of the most interesting and suspenseful cases from the series, like the politician’s case and the act of Sherlock’s past that made it highly interesting to watch. Season is composed of three episodes, “The Six Thatchers,” “The Lying Detective” and “The Final Problem,” that round the series up and offer an ending for the characters.
  • Is Sherlock Good?

    It is a straight yes to this question’s answer. The writing in Sherlock is clever and the show a particular triumph in its clever writing, its outstanding performances, and sleek production values. Fans of the detective genre, and more, have loved the show’s ability to balance intellect and entertainment.

    Despite some viewers grappling with some of the aspects of the show, beyond its complex plotlines or swift pacing, any rewards of such effort are well worth it. Combining humor, suspense, and intrigue, Sherlock is a show that a must-watch for a good television experience. Sherlock is just a great drama series whether you are a longtime fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories or simply have stumbled upon it.
